The Seattle Public Library System selected BOLA to evaluate the eligibility of its seven Modern-era libraries as City of Seattle landmarks. Extensive research reviewed the history of the public library in America, and the Seattle Public Library System, the rise of Modern architecture in the Northwest. BOLA prepared landmark nominations for the Central Library and six branch libraries. BOLA presented these at the City Landmark Board's public hearings. Three of the buildings, The North End, Magnolia, an Lake City Libraries, were designated as landmarks.

The Modern-era Public Library buildings were built in the 1950s and 1960s.  Their designs employed structural expressions, ample windows and natural light, open floor plans, accessible stacks and public amenities, which reflected a shift in libraries towards a broad role in civic life.

BOLA was subsequently commissioned by the Seattle Public Library to provide landmark nomination for four Carnegie-era branch libraries.
