The 1909 wood-framed, freight and passenger depot at South Cle Elum was part of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, the last northern tier continental railroad. The property, which also includes an electrical substation and remnants of a roundhouse, is
owned by the Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission.
BOLA was selected by State Parks in 2000 as the rehabilitation architect for the depot. The architects worked closely with Parks, the contractor, and an avid group of volunteers on this project.
The 132' by 24' building includes a small ticket office bay on the trackside and an interior which was originally divided into four sections -- freight/baggage, a kitchen/cafe, station agency, and waiting rooms for passengers and train crews.
The rehabilitation, which was phased over two years, included reroofing, restoration of the exterior to its 1940s appearance, and adaptive use of the interior for use as an exhibit area, equipment rental facility, and cafe,
opened in the summer of 2006.
The South Cle Elum Depot is an integral part of the Iron Horse State Park, along the John Wayne Pioneer Recreational Trail.
