This 2004 rehabilitation of an old brick bathhouse in Golden Gardens Park, serves the community's changing recreation and education needs. BOLA's interdisciplinary team worked with Seattle Parks and a Public Advisory Team on the building program and design.

Built in 1929, the Bathhouse has a layered history with more than 70 years of varied use, beginning in the Depression when it provided locker and changing rooms for swimmers and sunbathers. The 5,750 sq ft building is situated on Puget Sound between natural wetlands and low-tide areas, the beach and picnic shelters. The refurbished building provides flexible spaces including a multi-purpose room, a wet classroom for marine ecology and art classes, a small office, storage and service spaces. A new Beach Cafe was created within the foundation of a earlier addition to provide expanded use of the building, along with a new catering kitchen. BOLA's unique contributions to the project included development of the building program, a landmark nomination, and a lighting study, as well as design reviews with the Seattle Landmarks Board and leadership in sustainability design.
