The design
for the new thirteen-story apartment building at 201 Yesler Way
began with a feasibility study, and review of an existing 1891 era
building on the site. The project is located in the Pioneer Square
Historic District and subject to strict guidelines and design
reviews. With the Pioneer Square Preservation Board's
approval, the existing building was demolished.
The design of the new building provides 132 median-income
apartments, each with laundry facilities and kitchen. The first
floor provides a residential lobby, business center, and exercise
room for the tenants There is also a single retail
space, which will visually engage Fortson Square, a small park to
the west of the building, with large glazed openings and a raised
sidewalk terrace. The building's exterior concrete frame, glazed
window bands and vertical proportions recall the surrounding context
of Commercial style and Richardsonian Romanesque buildings of the
historic district. Currently under construction, the building will
be completed in the Summer of 2007.
