BOLA, with Weinstein A|U as the prime architect, is currently providing preservation design and review services for the rehabilitation and modernization of the William K. Nakamura Federal Courthouse in Seattle. Completed in 1940, the historic Courthouse is a major example of the Federal Art Deco style, employing classic, simple elements and massing consistent with the design image of a United States Courthouse and the era in which it was designed.
The construction budget for the 98,000 usable square foot building is $43M. BOLA’s work includes investigation and restoration design of the exterior ceramic veneer facades, interior terra cotta walls, and terrazzo floor finishes, and design review of interior rehabilitation of significant public and judicial spaces and exterior fenestration and site modifications.
Previous work on the building included assessments of the buildings' architectural and historic significance, condition analyses, zoned plans and recommendations for appropriate levels of preservation of significant areas, and cost estimates.
