The City of Roslyn grew rapidly during the early 20th century, and developed as an unusually diverse community, which is still in evidence in the city’s social and cultural landscape. During this period of rapid growth, a large, wood framed, miners’ social and athletic club -- the present Library and City Council Room -- was constructed. Purchased by the City in 1918, the building is a critical historical component in the Roslyn National Register Historic District.

BOLA Architecture + Planning provided a condition assessment of the building, planning for the library upgrade and expansion, and incorporation of the City’s administrative services. Several design alternatives were developed to enhance the building’s use as a viable community and arts facility. The project will restore the building’s exterior; modify the interior to facilitate continued use by the Library and City Administration; provide seismic, mechanical and electrical improvements; upgrade accessibility; and improve energy conservation.

New public functions such as gatherings and cultural events will be incorporated with adaptive use of the original gymnasium. The library will have improved circulation, staff and librarian spaces; expanded collection, seating, and storage areas; upgraded computer and technology systems; and replacement of the heating, plumbing, lighting and electrical systems.
