BOLA’s work on the Naval Reserve Armory began with documentation and evaluation of the 52,600 sq.ft. building, including the preparation of landmark nominations for both the National Register of Historic Places and the City of Seattle, in collaboration with the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI). Completed in 1942 and located at the south end of Lake Union (now in Lake Union Park), the Naval Reserve Armory is a concrete-frame Moderne style structure with nautical detailing. The interior features a full-height drill hall. The building was decommissioned in 1998 and will undergo rehabilitation for adaptive use as the new museum. BOLA’s scope includes design reviews and preservation consultation for the prime architect, LMN, and preparation of a Federal Investment Tax Credit Certification Application. All work is consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
