In August 2010, BOLA was selected to provide design services for the next phase of structural stabilization for the Jefferson County Courthouse. The scope includes evaluation of a previous structural report; field verification, site investigation, and development of documents to provide design concepts and cost estimates; phasing options; and drawings and specifications to bid the project.
The construction of the original courthouse was part of the Port Townsend’s effort to establish itself as a key city in the Pacific Northwest during the late 19th century. The Romanesque Revival style courthouse, opened in 1892, is a monumental building, set apart from the rest of the town by both location and architectural style. The 29,905 square foot, load-bearing masonry structure is articulated by turrets, windows, and bands of rusticated stonework, with a tall clock tower rising above. The courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is also a national landmark.
Work is partially funded by a matching grant from the State Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation Historic County Courthouse Grant Rehabilitation Program, requiring DAHP review, schedule accountability and quarterly progress statements.
